The Reflexology Practice

Foot Reflexology

Foot Reflexology treatment session in Galway

Supporting the entire body through the feet.

Pressure techniques to ease aches, improve circulation, and maintain balance.

The feet contain over 7,000 nerve endings that connect directly to the central nervous system, brain, and spinal cord. Through these neural pathways, specific zones across the soles, sides, and tops of the feet correspond to related organs, joints, and muscles throughout the body.

Applying targeted pressure to these nerve pathways sends calming signals through the nervous system, helping to interrupt pain cycles, improve blood flow, and release muscle tension. Each treatment blends focused thumb and finger pressure across the reflex points with gentle stretches and relaxing movements, always tailored to your comfort level.

Foot reflexology can support a range of concerns, including:

  • stress, anxiety, and mental fatigue
  • emotional support during times of grief, burnout, or exhaustion
  • difficulty switching off and nervous tension
  • poor sleep and low energy
  • headaches, migraines, and sinus congestion
  • nerve pain, sciatica, and peripheral neuropathy
  • back pain, hip and pelvic tension, and joint stiffness (including arthritis and knee pain)
  • frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, and carpal tunnel
  • plantar fasciitis, foot strain, and aching feet
  • digestive issues, including reflux, bloating, and constipation
  • fluid retention, swelling, and oedema (including lymphoedema)
  • menstrual health, painful or irregular periods, and PMS
  • perimenopause and menopause
  • complementary support during and after cancer treatment

Regular treatments offer a quiet space away from the hustle of daily life to ease physical tension and support overall health – even when there are no specific symptoms to address.

What to Expect

Your session will begin with a brief consultation to discuss your health history, current concerns, and what you hope to get from the treatment.

You will remain fully clothed—removing only shoes and socks—while resting comfortably on the treatment bed under a warm blanket. Loose clothing is recommended.

I will work across both feet, focusing on the specific reflex points connected to your symptoms. For targeted pain relief, I may also work directly on the painful area or incorporate hand reflexes where needed.

Hand reflexology palmar technique

After the treatment, we will discuss any observations from the session alongside practical aftercare advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does foot reflexology hurt?

Reflexology should not be a painful experience. While congested reflex points or areas of tension can sometimes feel slightly tender, I always work strictly within your comfort level. If your feet are particularly sensitive or painful to touch directly, we can use very light pressure, gentle off-body balancing techniques, or work via corresponding reflexes on the hands.

What if my feet are very ticklish or sensitive?

Reflexology uses firm, grounded, and deliberate pressure rather than light, feathery strokes. This calms the nervous system and rarely triggers a ticklish response. The depth of pressure is always adjusted to make sure you are completely comfortable.

Can reflexology diagnose medical conditions?

No. Reflexology is a complementary therapy that supports circulation, relieves physical tension, and regulates the nervous system. It is not a diagnostic tool or a substitute for medical evaluation or care.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing. You remain fully clothed throughout the treatment, removing only shoes and socks. Trousers that can be easily rolled up to just below the knees are recommended.

How will I feel after a session?

Most clients feel deeply relaxed, calm, and grounded. Because reflexology stimulates circulation and lymph flow, you may also feel pleasantly tired or noticeably thirsty afterwards as your body settles. Drinking plenty of water after your treatment helps support this natural rebalancing process.

How many sessions will I need?

Many clients notice relief and deep relaxation after a single session. For persistent muscular tension, chronic digestive concerns, or long-standing joint discomfort, an initial course of 4 to 6 regular sessions followed by periodic maintenance usually brings the best results.

Can I claim reflexology on my health insurance?

Depending on your policy plan, yes. Official receipts with relevant professional registration details are provided for every treatment so you can submit your claim.

Plans covering reflexology frequently include:

  • Laya Healthcare
  • Irish Life Health
  • Vhi Healthcare
  • Level Health
