Safety & Contraindications
My Commitment to Your Care
Reflexology is a complementary therapy designed to support your overall wellbeing and works alongside conventional healthcare rather than replacing medical diagnosis, treatment, or advice from your doctor.
Your health and safety come first. To ensure every session is safe, supportive, and tailored to you, I follow thorough pre-treatment consultations, adapt techniques to your individual needs, and maintain strict hygiene standards throughout.
Before Your First Treatment
Before your session, you will be asked to complete a brief health questionnaire covering relevant information about your health, medications, and medical history. Please ensure this information is accurate and up to date, and let me know if anything changes between appointments.
This information helps me determine whether reflexology is appropriate, how your session can be safely adapted, or if an appointment should be postponed.
When Treatment Cannot Be Carried Out
For your safety, reflexology cannot be performed if you currently have:
- Suspected or confirmed deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Kidney failure or acute renal conditions
- An acute illness with a fever
- A contagious infection
- A fungal infection affecting the treatment area
- Significant acute inflammation in the treatment area
- An open wound, broken skin, or an area not yet sufficiently healed after injury or surgery
- Significant, sudden, or unexplained swelling
If any of the above apply, your treatment will be postponed until it is safe to proceed.
Medical Advice & Adaptations
In some circumstances, I may recommend speaking with your GP or healthcare provider prior to booking—especially if a condition is new, unstable, or unexplained. In many cases, treatments can be tailored and adapted to your individual needs.
Pregnancy
Please note: I do not currently treat pregnant clients.
If you are looking for reflexology during pregnancy, I recommend choosing a practitioner who specialises in maternity reflexology.
During & After Your Treatment
- During Treatment: Some reflex points may feel tender. Pressure is always adjusted to work comfortably within your preferred tolerance.
- After Treatment: You may feel deeply relaxed or sleepy, so allow yourself time to rest if needed. If you feel lightheaded, having a light snack and staying hydrated is recommended.
- Temporary Responses: Occasionally, clients experience mild, short-lived responses after a session (such as mild tiredness or a light headache). This is a normal response and typically settles within 24–48 hours.
If you have any questions following your treatment, feel free to reach out. If you feel unwell or develop symptoms requiring medical care, please contact your healthcare provider.
Cleanliness & Hygiene Standards
Maintaining a clean, safe, and hygienic environment is central to my practice:
- Linens & Surfaces: Fresh towels and linens are used for every client, and treatment surfaces are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between appointments.
- Tools & Equipment: Reusable tools are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between clients, while single-use items are disposed of immediately after use.
- Hygiene Practices: I wash and sanitise my hands thoroughly before and after every treatment.
- Facial Reflexology: A disposable face mask is worn throughout the treatment for your comfort due to the close proximity to your face. Gloves may also be used when working with specific skin conditions.
