The Reflexology Practice

Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD)

Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD) treatment

Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD) is a specialised reflexology technique that works with specific lymphatic reflexes on the feet. Developed and researched by Sally Kay through her work in cancer care, it initially focused on supporting secondary lymphoedema following breast cancer treatment.

What is lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is a condition where the lymphatic system is unable to drain fluid from the tissues effectively, causing swelling. There are two main types:

  • Primary lymphoedema develops because the lymphatic system doesn't develop or function normally and is usually linked to genetic factors.
  • Secondary lymphoedema develops when a previously functioning lymphatic system becomes damaged. Cancer treatment is one of the main causes.

This can happen when lymph nodes are removed during surgery or when the lymphatic system is damaged by radiotherapy. Lymphoedema can occur in different parts of the body, depending on which part of the lymphatic system has been affected.

After breast cancer treatment, secondary lymphoedema most commonly affects the arm or hand on the treated side, but it can also affect the breast, chest or shoulder. It doesn't happen to everyone, and it can develop soon after treatment or sometimes months or even years later.

It may cause swelling, heaviness, tightness, aching or a feeling of fullness or pressure, and the affected area may feel different from the other side.

How is lymphoedema usually managed?

Lymphoedema is usually managed rather than cured, with care tailored to the individual. Management may include:

  • Compression sleeves or gloves
  • Movement and exercise
  • Skin care to help prevent infection
  • Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD)
  • Simple lymphatic drainage (SLD), taught by a lymphoedema specialist

If new or unexplained swelling develops, it should always be assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional.

When RLD May Help

Reflexology Lymph Drainage may be used as a complementary form of support alongside conventional management:
  • Lymphoedema
  • Swelling or oedema
  • Post-operative swelling
  • Fluid retention
  • Sinus problems
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Muscular tension, aches, and pains
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Rheumatoid arthritis & auto-immune conditions
  • Allergies

What to Expect from Your Session

RLD is performed on the feet using a specific sequence that works with the lymphatic reflexes. The treatment sequence varies according to the reason for your appointment.

When RLD is being used specifically for arm lymphoedema, both arms are measured before and after the treatment. This provides an objective way of monitoring changes in the affected arm.

What to wear: If you are attending for arm lymphoedema, please wear a sleeveless top or vest with an easy-to-remove cardigan or loose layer, so that both arms are accessible for measurement before and after your session.

Contraindications for RLD

RLD is not carried out if you have:

  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Cellulitis
  • Undiagnosed swelling
  • Unstable heart conditions
  • Oedema due to end-of-life organ failure

RLD is a complementary reflexology technique and does not replace medical assessment or treatment. Any diagnosed lymphoedema or other medical condition should continue to be managed by your healthcare team.

For general reflexology safety, please see the Safety & Contra-indications page.
